What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is not just for athletes or those involved in sporting activities. It is beneficial to anyone and everyone, helping with aches and pains, posture, stress and overall health. The name "sports massage" is derived from sports science concerned with prevention and rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability. Sports massage aims to restore a patient’s homeostatic balance through soft tissue manipulation and corrective methods of treatment and can be used to treat any acute or chronic condition affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and nerves anywhere in the body. It doesn't matter what the cause - trauma, age related degenerative changes, arthritis, bad posture, sport etc - all ages can benefit from treatment and advice.

Sports massage, when done correctly, supports healing by removing tension from muscles that arise from day to day life, improves lymphatic flow, and correction to bio-mechanical problems. This is done utilising multiple techniques by applying direct pressure in differing directions to influence blood flow, nerves and the muscle fibres. Massage is a positive way to improve your well being, creating a better state of relaxation and recovery within the body. With the modern stresses of daily life and the tension which develops because of them, massage is beneficial for everyone to have on a regular basis. Regular massages will help with aches and pains, posture, stress and overall health. I draw from elements of both styles within my treatments to address issues and dysfunction in a holistic manner.

Benefits of Sports Massage

  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Relieves pain and tension
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Enhances flexibility and range of motion
  • Boosts immune system function
  • Decreases recovery time

What to Expect?

The treatment is a very vigorous massage; every technique requires movement as well as pressure. After the first session you may feel a little sore and you might leave feeling a bit light headed. Some patients experience sleepiness while others feel supercharged. Almost always, everyone feels better afterwards.  As with acupuncture, massage produces many side effects, but the majority of them are positive. A common example is the person treated for chronic back pain finding that their chronic constipation has also been eased. Sometimes side effects can be very emotional and patients feel like crying uncontrollably. Commonly feelings of relaxation, increased mobility and less pain are induced.

In conclusion, sports massage can provide benefits to individuals who don't engage in sports by reducing stress and anxiety, relieving pain and tension, improving circulation, enhancing flexibility and range of motion, and boosting immune system function. Equally for athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike. Whether you are looking to improve athletic performance, reduce recovery time, or reduce the risk of injury, sports massage can help you achieve your goals. By using a variety of techniques, sports massage can target specific areas of the body and achieve specific goals. So, if you are looking to take your athletic performance to the next level, consider incorporating sports massage into your training routine.

So, whether you are an athlete or not, sports massage can be a valuable tool for promoting overall health and wellness.
